Nestled in the woodlands of Gahanna, Ohio, the Parker House was designed in 1972 by George Parker, a Columbus architect with a talent for blending homes seamlessly with nature. With its open layout, spiral staircase, and sunken tub, the Parker House was recognized in 1978 by the Columbus chapter of the American Institute of Architects for its thoughtful design.
Over the years, the property faced challenges, including the threat of demolition for new housing developments. Thankfully, in 2022, its story took a hopeful turn when Ted and Min, the current owners, stepped in to restore and preserve the home. Their careful work honored the house’s original features—like its bold wallpapers and unique architectural touches—while updating it for modern use. Today, the Parker House serves as a luxurious retreat, offering visitors a chance to connect with both its history and the surrounding natural beauty.
Beyond its architectural significance, the Parker House invites you to explore the diverse surrounding ecosystems. Scattered throughout the property, you’ll find QR code signs—each offering insights into the wild edibles, native plants, and wildlife that call this land home.
Use your camera phone to scan the codes and begin a self-guided tour of Ohio’s natural wonders. Discover how Indigenous people and early settlers may have used these plants, learn about their role in supporting local wildlife, and uncover their ecological significance. You might even find inspiration for your own sustainable living practices.
Take your time, wander the trails, and let the forest guide your curiosities. Each step brings you closer to understanding the delicate balance between history, human design, and the wild beauty of Ohio’s landscapes.

Nature doesn’t always follow the calendar! While many plants and mushrooms have specific seasons, they can sometimes appear earlier or later if conditions are just right. Keep your eyes open—you might spot something unexpected! Once I found chicken of the woods mushrooms during April. That was quite a surprise!
