Central Ohio is home to many species of mushrooms worth foraging, each with its own unique culinary, medicinal and creative uses, and role within the ecosystem. From the bright orange chicken of the woods (Laetiporus sulphureus) to velvety blue or brown turkey tail (Trametes versicolor), the variety of shapes, colors, and textures might surprise you. Depending on the time of year, edible morels (Morchella), puffballs (Lycoperdaceae), or honey mushrooms (Armillaria mellea) may be spotted.
Mushrooms can grow almost anywhere—popping up from the soil, emerging from fallen logs, or even appearing high in the treetops. Some species can even grow on stone itself or treated lumber. The forest floor is the most reliable place to start, especially in shaded, damp areas rich with leaf litter and decomposing wood. Foraging mushrooms often feels like a treasure hunt, revealing themselves to those who take the time to look.
Take a look around to see which species might reveal themselves!
